I tried Sharon, the voice apparently intended for long-form fiction reading, and I found her to be just awful! Her voice is jerky, slightly too robotic, and mispronounces things in irritating ways that are hard to fix. Whatever you do, though, you're going to need to make a dictionary entry for Hermione. There are only a few voices in the world that get her name right by default, and I don't think any of them are available on IOS. If you're curious, the voices I have who get Hermione right are Ivona Emma (no longer sold or supported) and all of the voices. You'll still need to go and fix tons and tons of other obscure stuff (Accio and other spell names especially) though. Some voices are sensitive to spacing, capitalization, and punctuation.

The Acapela voices, on some platforms, are especially bad for this in my experience. For example, if a sentence ends with a period, but the author forgets to start the next sentence with a capital, those voices often won't pause properly, and instead just run one sentence into another. So it could well be that whatever voice you're using treats 'wand ', 'wand ', 'Wand', 'wand!'

, and 'wand?' Differently for pronunciation. That makes creating pronunciation dictionaries crazy difficult.

It's one of the reasons I like neospeech so much; while the voices may be a tad more robotic than something like Ivona, at least they behave in predictable ways. As someone who was born completely blind, so uses TTS for absolutely everything, I have ridiculously strong opinions about what is the best voice and why; I've worked hard to moderate myself here and not just come off as a troll LOL. I use Ivona voices - I find that they sound much more natural and much less robotic that either Acapela or Neospeech.

I've purchased at least one each from those other two services, but I was disappointed in them and frankly wish I hadn't wasted the money.From Ivona, I've purchased Amy and Emma for British works, Salli for American works, Celine for French, and Marlene for German.Emma is a bit higher pitched than Amy and can sound like a young girl, but I've also found that which sounds better depends a lot on what you're using to listen to them. In headphones with weak bass, Amy sounds better while Emma sounds way too much like a girl. In headphones with better base, Amy sounds good while Emma sounds way too deep.On one device of mine that doesn't have Emma installed for Voice Dream Reader, it is still offered, so I woudn't have said that it's no longer offered or supported. I'm not sure. But to be safe, you might want to consider purchasing and downloading all the Ivona voices you want before year end. Either that or contact VoiceDream support to verify what's going on with Ivona voices there.Edit: formatting. Since text-to-speech is all they do, ending support for all those services suggests they are folding. But they still seem to be selling their services. At least, their website doesn't say anything about 'don't buy this, we won't support it in a couple of months.' You can only get the voices via 'partners,' which I assume is what VDR did.

So maybe Ivona isn't offering direct support to individuals (like you and me), but will still offer voices and the partners will have offer support when there are software issues? That would be nice. I used to use Amy only. I purchased Emma because I liked the accent, but didn't like how she sounded like a little girl - it got on my nerves quickly.Then I switched to different headphones (Sennheisers finally quit on me) and suddenly Amy sounded way too deep. But Emma sounded fine all of the sudden. Now I only listen to Emma!It's curious how much the headphones matter, but I wanted to make sure people understood this because in the long run, it might be worthwhile to voices available. You never know what headphones or speakers you'll be using in a year.
